How to Place a Rug in a Bedroom

Hardwood and laminate floors are the dominant floorings of choice in home trends these days. While it looks great in a bedroom, it has one major drawback. It doesn’t feel great on your toes as the first thing they touch when getting out of bed in the morning or the last thing your feet touch when getting in bed at night. It feels hard and slightly cold, creating a jarring experience that isn’t conducive to creating a relaxing atmosphere. To fix this, you need a rug. However, you need the right size of rug to place it correctly in your room. This guide will show you how to place a rug in your bedroom.

The Size of Your Bed

Where you place the area rug in your bedroom will depend greatly on the size of your bed. For example, an 8 x 10 rug will look nice under a queen sized bed but could get lost under a king if not placed correctly. If you have a king bed, then you’ll do better with a 9 x 12 rug. A full sized bed can work with a 5 x8 rug. Additionally, you will need a larger rug when you plan to place the rug underneath the bed. If you aren’t putting the rug completely under the bed, then you can get away with a smaller rug.

A queen mattress can work with a wide range of rug sizes, including 8 x10, 6 x 9, 5 x 8, or 3 x 5 rug. The size you use will depend on your chosen placement. A king mattress can work with a 9 x 12, 8 x10, 6 x 9, 5 x 8, or 3 x 5 rug.

The Size of the Room

The size and placement of your rug will also depend on the size and layout of your room. For example, a small room may look strange with an oversized area rug that extends out the end and sides of the bed, leaving an awkwardly large chunk of flooring in one spot. You would need to buy an even larger rug to cover the rest of the floor or a smaller rug that exposes more of the floor.

Placing a Rug in a Small Bedroom

If you have a small bedroom, then buy a larger rug that covers almost the entire floor, leaving only two to five inches of bare floor around it. A 4 x 6 or 5 x 8 rug will not be large enough for this. They only cover about two-thirds of the floor under the bed. If your small bedroom is also square-shaped, then consider placing a large round rug in the center of the room. That way, you could place at least one leg from each furniture piece in the room on the rug. This grounds the room and the furniture.

Placing a Rug in a Large Bedroom

The struggle with a large bedroom is that you need to consider proportions. The rug needs to be large enough to look balanced under the bed but also small enough to leave plenty of floor space around it. It is unlikely you will buy a rug large enough to cover the entire floor space. For example, if your bedroom is 12 x 18 feet, this would require a large rug that you will struggle to find and will be expensive.

Bed Placement

Where your bed is placed in your bedroom will affect where you can place your rug. If your bed is pushed against the wall, then you may only need a rug next to the bed. A bed placed in the center of the room looks good with a rug that extends out from either side and the bottom. A bed in the middle of a square room could look balanced with a round rug that is positioned in the center of the room. Then a portion of the bed would be on the rug but not the entire thing.

How to Place a Rug Under Your Bed

Let’s assume that your bed is placed in the typical position, with the head pushed against the wall with the foot of the bed extending out into the center of the room.

Under Everything

Your first option is to buy a large enough rug to go under the entire bed. Place the edge of the rug against the wall and place the bed and nightstands on the rug. The rug should be large enough to extend at least ten inches out the sides and foot.

In Front of the Nightstands

Your second option is to place the rug completely under the bed but in front of the nightstands. With this approach, the rug should be placed close to the front of the nightstand so that you will put your feet on it when getting in and out of bed. However, it should not be pushed right up against the nightstand, either. This would crowd the nightstands and make your bedroom feel cramped.

One Third of the Bed

If you have a small rug, turn it so that the long side of the rug is perpendicular to the bed. Then position the rug so that it is under at least one third of the bed. Finally, try to leave at least ten inches of rug overhang at the foot of the bed. This setup lets you save money on buying a smaller rug while also grounding the room.

One on Either Side

Instead of buying one large rug that goes under the entire rug, you can buy two smaller rugs. Place one on either side of the bed. Choose long rugs that are rectangle in shape. The position the rug so that it’s eight to ten inches from the nightstand. Do not push the rug too far down towards the foot of the bed. It should be positioned under your feet when getting in or out of bed.

At the Foot

Add an accent to the foot of the bed by placing a small rectangle rug at the foot of the bed. This is good if you have a bench or chest at the foot of your bed. It should be a small rug as you don’t want it extending too far under the bed.

Other Ways to Place a Rug in Your Bedroom

If you want to define the space, you can place a rug under the other furniture in your bedroom. For example, you could have a reading nook in one corner. Placing a rug under the armchair, light, and side table defines this space and helps it to feel more intimate. If you have a vanity table or office desk, placing a small rug under these furniture pieces can help to visually define the spaces. If your bedroom is connected to your bathroom or walk-in closet, placing a long runner rug can connect these two spaces.

What Size Shower Curtain Do You Need?

The shower curtain that you need will depend entirely on the size and design of your shower. There is a set of standard sizes that will work for most homeowners. However, you’ll need to measure your shower to know what size will work best for you. There are also unusual shower shapes and sizes that require a specialty shower curtain that’s made specifically for that particular shower type.

What are Standard Shower Curtain Sizes?

A typical tub shower has a length of 60 inches. The standard shower curtain is slightly larger than this. Additionally, the standard shower head mounting height is 80 inches. This puts the showerhead’s output just below the shower curtain rod. To cover the open space of the average shower, there are three standard shower curtain sizes. They will work for the majority of tub and shower combos.

- 72 x 72 inches
Special Shower Curtain Sizes

Not every tub and shower is built the same, so there are specialty sizes. This could be an oversized shower that’s significantly taller or wider than a standard shower. There are extra small shower stalls that need a shower curtain much smaller than the standard. Then there are freestanding tubs that need protection on all sides.

Oversized Showers

If you have an oversized shower, you’ll have a much larger space that you’ll need to cover. A standard shower curtain won’t work, but thankfully, you can find shower curtains that measure up to 108 inches. If you don’t like the idea of buying a single large curtain, or if you can’t find one large enough, your second option is to buy two curtains. What’s nice about this option is that you can open them to either side, reducing the bulk of a single curtain piled upon one side. There are a couple of common extra-large shower curtain sizes.
- Extra tall showers- 70 x 84 inches or 72 x 84 inches
- Extra-wide showers- 84 x 74 inches or 144 x 72 inches
Shower Stalls

A shower stall doesn’t have a tub but instead is a very small shower that can typically only fit one person. It’s quite small, lacking the space for you to move around. Because of their unique shape, shower curtains for shower stalls have a much smaller width and taller height. This makes them long and skinny. Similar to the other shower curtain styles, there are standard sizes. To determine if the standard size will fit your shower stall, start by measuring the width. Do this by using a tape measure to measure wall to wall. Add the twelve inches to account for slack.

Start below the shower curb and measure up to the curtain rod height to measure the height. This can be slightly tricky because the shower’s curb tends to be only a few inches in height. Therefore, the curtain needs to be long enough to prevent water from splashing out while also not too long that it drags on the floor.

Freestanding Tubs

A freestanding tub presents a unique challenge because you need to guard against water splashing out from all sides. You should be safe with the standard height for the curtain. You need a curtain that will hang below the tub’s edge but not drag on the ground. To determine the width, you need to measure around the outer edge of the tub. This will give you the distance that you need to cover.

You will still need to add the extra 12 inches to ensure you have folds and give in the fabric. You don’t want the curtain pulled taut around the tub’s edge. Typically, people purchase two shower curtains for their freestanding tub. Each one covers a long side, making it easier to get in and out of the tub. You will also have more options since you will have a smaller width to look for.

Curved Shower Curtain Rods

A curved shower rod is nice because it gives you a few extra inches of space when in the shower. However, the curve also means the curtain has to cover a longer distance. Because of this, you’ll need a larger curtain than if you used a straight curtain rod. A curved rod will typically be six inches longer than a straight rod. If you use a 72-inch curtain, it will have a tighter look than what you want. Instead, opt for an oversized shower curtain. This will give you more extra fabric for a looser look. The result will look better, and it will function better.

How to Measure For a Shower Curtain

The first step is to measure the width of your shower. Use a tape measure to find out the distance from the one side wall to the other wall. It’s easiest to determine the distance in inches since this is the measurement that is used on the majority of shower curtains sold in the United States. Once you have the distance. Add twelve inches to give the curtain extra fabric so that it hangs with folds and you have extra on the ends for full coverage.

The second step is to measure the height of the curtain. Do not measure from the room’s ceiling to the floor. It’s unlikely that you will hang your curtain this high. Instead, measure from the floor to the height of the shower curtain rod. Subtract one to two inches to keep the curtain off the floor and another one to two inches to account for the hooks. The resulting number is the height of the curtain you will need.

Take the two measurements, and you now have the dimensions needed for your shower curtain. If you can’t find a curtain with those exact measurements, then you can look for a curtain that’s similar but may be slightly off. A tension rod or adjustable curtain rod is nice in this situation because you can move the rod to achieve the perfect look. Perhaps you buy a curtain that is slightly longer than what you need. You can move the curtain up higher to get the right look.

Where Should the Shower Rod Go?

If there isn’t a permanent shower curtain rod installed, you will need to decide where on the wall to install one. Consider both its height and lateral placement in comparison to the edge of the tub. If you plan to mount a permanent rod, buy the curtain before mounting the rob. That way, you can make placement adjustments during the installation process to ensure you achieve your desired finished look. If you plan to use a tension rod, it’s much easier to move it to where you need it.

When it comes to height, you should install your shower curtain rod higher than the showerhead. Otherwise, you risk splashing water out of the shower and into the bathroom. Some people like to mount their rods at ceiling height, but depending on the height of your ceilings, this can be too high for the proportions of the bathroom.

Then consider rod placement laterally. It should be too far out from the shower because it won’t effectively contain the water. On the other hand, it also shouldn’t be too far into the shower. This will reduce the amount of available space you have while using the shower. A good general placement is to mount the rod over the tub’s edge or slightly in front of this edge. Slightly in front helps the decorative curtain to hang straight down, creating a nicer finished look.

Are Shower Curtains Supposed to Touch the Floor?

Some people argue that a shower curtain that touches the floor isn’t sanitary. This is because there are germs all over your bathroom floor that will get on your shower curtain. The response to this is that if the germs are on your floor, they are probably already on the shower curtain, too, so it doesn’t matter if the curtain touches the floor. Additionally, what does it matter if the germs are on the bottom of your shower curtain? It isn’t like you be touching this material or doing anything with it.

Whether or not your shower curtain touches the floor is more of a style issue than a sanitary one. You definitely don’t want a shower curtain that is so long that it pools on the floor. This won’t be functional and will harbor moisture for mildew to flourish. It’s up to you and your personal preference whether the curtain reaches the floor or not. However, if you choose to have a curtain that doesn’t reach the floor, it should be at least 4-6 inches longer than the top of your tub. You will also need a liner that stays on the inside of the tub to help contain the water.

Should Shower Curtains Stay Open or Closed?

Ultimately, whether you decide to keep your shower curtain open or closed it up to you and your preferences. There are arguments for both, so there is no correct position for your shower curtain. Those who prefer to leave the shower curtain option do so because it helps the bathroom feel bigger. You don’t have a curtain wall cutting through the bathroom and blocking your ability to see the entire expanse of the space.

Those who prefer to leave the shower curtain closed argue that doing so helps show off your chosen shower curtain. If you have a decorative one, then spreading it open showcases it. Otherwise, no one will ever see it bunched up against the wall. Leaving the shower curtain closed also looks nicer and more put together in the bathroom. If your shower is a bit dirtier than you’d like, leaving it closed hides this when you have guests. Leaving it closed also helps to prevent mildew by allowing air to flow around the entire curtain so that it can dry effectively.

How High Should a Fireplace Mantel Be?
Having a fireplace in your home gives you a natural focal point to gather around. It becomes the heart of the home as you spend time around it and make lasting memories with family and friends. When this one element becomes such a central part of your time in your home, it needs to have a balanced and attractive design. This means having a mantel that frames and defines the fireplace.

Like the eyebrows on your face, getting the design of your fireplace mantel right is crucial for having an attractive room. Follow this guide when choosing the height of your fireplace mantel.

Standard Fireplace Mantel Height

The short answer is that the average fireplace mantel height is 54 inches. However, just because it’s the standard doesn’t mean that it’s the right height for your fireplace. Several factors go into determining the ideal height for your fireplace mantel.

Room Size

When choosing your fireplace mantel, the first thing to consider is the room size. Next, you need to consider scale and proportion. The larger the room is, the more substantial your fireplace mantel can be. Depending on the room’s height, fireplace mantels can range from four to six feet from the floor.

The smaller the soon is, the lower the mantel should be. For example, a room less than 120 square feet will look best when the mantel is around four feet off the ground. Large rooms 180 square feet or larger look better when the mantel is about six feet from the floor.

Ceiling Height

The average ceiling height is nine feet. This corresponds with the average mantel height of 54 to 56 inches. The top of the mantel should be 4.5 feet from the floor. It’s important to note that the top of the mantel is the point of measurement. You want to maintain the height above the mantel. If you place the bottom of the mantel at the 4.5-foot mark, then a mantel with a face height of six inches will elevate the top of the mantel to five feet. This small six-inch shift can completely throw off the room’s proportions and make the fireplace mantel feel awkwardly high.

No matter what your ceiling height is, there should be at least three feet between the top of the mantel and the ceiling. This will give you enough room to arrange decor on the mantel or hang a small TV or artwork on the wall. Additionally, a space smaller than this will create an optical illusion where the ceiling gets pulled down, making it lower than it really is.

Mantel Face Height

The face of the mantel is the front edge of it. In other words, it’s how thick the mantel is. Generally, fireplace mantels have a face height of three to seven inches. The height of your mantel will depend on the size of the room and your ceiling height. Smaller rooms with lower ceiling heights will look best with a smaller face height. Large rooms or those with extra tall ceilings can support a higher mantel height. Getting this measurement right is about measuring your room and understanding how to scale your mantel to suit the space.

Mantel Depth

The mantel depth is how far the mantel sticks out from the wall. The depth of the mantel will influence its placement in relation to the fireplace. At a minimum, your mantel shouldn’t be shallower than three inches. Any smaller than this, and it won’t be worth having at all. A shallower depth can allow for closer placement to the fireplace. A deeper fireplace requires you to move the mantel higher up on the wall.

When choosing the depth of your fireplace mantel, consider the footpath through the room, its layout, and overall size. You don’t want an overly deep mantel extending too far, causing people to bump into it. Small or compact rooms need a more shallow mantel, while rooms with more space to move around can support a deeper mantel.

If your mantel is made from another material, such as stone, glass, or metal, then you’ll need to consider its ability to withstand heat and dissipate that heat. Materials that are are combustible or dissipate heat slowly should be mounted higher to help protect them.

Fireplace Design

Once you have done all of your measurements, you need to consider the design style of your fireplace. This will influence the design style and placement of your fireplace mantel. Traditional fireplaces typically have a single decorative piece that surrounds the fireplace. This creates a predetermined height for the fireplace mantel. Contemporary fireplaces are the large timber boxes or beams that sit about a foot above the top of the fireplace. They have a clean design that has the wood set into the wall. Modern fireplace mantels tend to have a slightly higher placement to create more space around them to retain the sleek and open feeling that modern design styles embrace.

TV Mounting Over the Fireplace Mantel

If you plan to hang a TV over your fireplace mantel, you need to consider this when choosing your mantel height. There needs to be enough space for the TV to hang on the wall. Typically, the bottom of the TV should be between four and twelve inches above the mantel.

This can damage the delicate internal components of a TV. However, higher isn’t always better for viewing comfort. Small rooms where the sofa is closer to the fireplace will benefit from the TV being placed lower on the wall. If you need to balance heat and viewing comfort, try angling the TV slightly downward. This can make it more comfortable to view the TV while allowing you to place it slightly higher to protect it from rising heat.

Finally, your home is just that, yours. All of these measurements and design rules aside, you need to do what makes you happy. When designing your fireplace, don’t forget to consider your personal preferences and tastes. If you love mantels that are made from thick logs with a raw edge, then go ahead and use one for your mantel. If you have a big screen TV and need an additional few inches on the wall, mount your mantel slightly lower to accommodate it.
