16 Bedroom Decor Ideas and Styles For Women

Creating the perfect women’s bedroom is far from being a cookie-cutter solution where you simply fill the space with lots of pink and lace. Because each woman is unique, each woman’s bedroom decorating ideas will also be highly distinctive.

Bedroom ideas for women can be dark, dramatic, modern, or Scandinavian. They can also be frilly, floral, delicate tributes to classic femininity. Whichever interior design style you prefer, here are some of our best bedroom ideas for women to get you started.

    1. Creating an Aesthetic Woman’s Bedroom

A woman’s bedroom decor should reflect the most genuine aspects of her personality. An aesthetic woman bedroom is one where her personality plays a major role in her home decor choices.

Modern aesthetic woman bedroom ideas include muted neutral colors and pinks, fairy lights and other fun light fixtures, and touches of greenery—real or faux. Wall decor may include photo collages, art prints, and simple motivational piece of word art. Moon phase garlands are popular in aesthetic bedrooms, often hung over the headboard.

    2. Designing an Attic Bedroom with Unique Architectural Features

An attic bedroom may be a small room or quite spacious. Regardless of its size, an attic bedroom space often has unusual architectural features to work around, such as deeply angled ceilings, half walls, and irregularly shaped rooms. While this may be challenging, these features also help elevate your bedroom design.

Sharply angled ceilings offer some creative bedroom decor options. For example, hang strings of white fairy lights behind a dark blue sheet tacked to the slanted ceilings. At night time, you will feel like you’ve been magically transported to a cozy valley, to sleep beneath a starry sky.

    3. Creating a Vibrant Boho Bedroom with Natural Textures and Accents

A boho bedroom features bright colors on a neutral background, international decoration accents, and plenty of natural textures and materials. Shag carpeting and macrame wall hangings bring forth that 1970s boho vibe, further accentuated with vintage wicker headboard and rattan fans used as bedroom wall art.

Whimsical boho touches may include an assorted floor cushion and throw pillow collection with fun embellishments like pompoms and fringe. If you have a small bedroom, make sure your furniture is to scale—not oversized. Scatter colorful rugs in different sizes between your bedroom furniture for a fun bohemian touch.

    4. Elevate Your Master Bedroom with Chic Neutral Tones and Natural Textures

Create a chic master bedroom by focusing on a neutral color palette—but fill it with inviting, natural textures and prints. For example, pair a velvet upholstered bed with white faux fur pillows and a leopard print throw. Add affordable texture with a DIY faux brick accent wall and whitewash it, as shown in this video:

Mirrored furniture or an oversized framed floor mirror propped against the wall are chic ways to help a small bedroom look bigger. Add a designer overhead light fixture and complementary table lamps to round out your chic, feminine bedroom design.

    5. Embracing Contemporary Bedroom Trends with a Touch of Vintage

Contemporary bedroom ideas for women embrace today’s trends, with a clean, sophisticated ambience. Contrasting colors are a common contemporary bedroom idea. Pair black and white with a bold shot of orange, or decorate your space with colors opposite each other on the color wheel.

Even if you love contemporary bedroom decor, it’s not an all-or-nothing situation. Add a few softer, vintage decoration embellishments if it suits your personality. For example, sleek metal lamps with Edison bulbs are a fantastic marriage between contemporary and traditional decor ideas.

    6. Exploring Cottage Style Bedroom Ideas: From Rustic Tudor to Beach Chic

If you have an idea for a cottage style bedroom, there are several directions you choose from to style your space. Go rustic English Tudor if you already have vintage touches in your living room and kitchen. Or go beach cottage with a sand and water color scheme atop a white bedroom foundation.

Shabby chic is another cottage-inspired idea if you love floral fabrics, lace, crystal lamps, and other distinctly feminine touches. Cottage style—no matter which idea you choose—should always feel comfortably worn and welcoming. A crocheted bed cover is a homespun bedroom idea that works great with cottage style.

    7. Elevating Femininity with Dark Colors in Bedroom Decor

Dark colors might not initially come to mind when you think of women’s bedroom ideas. But dark hues of grey, brown, green, and burgundy can all be delightfully feminine when used in the right ways. For example, charcoal or black wall paint may be too much if used on all four walls. But a single dark color bedroom wall can add just the right amount of drama to a large or small bedroom.

Dark furniture is a great accent in an otherwise light color feminine space. Pair dark walnut or even black furniture with pale walls and soft textiles as it will help ground the space. Place a fluffy pink pillow on a deep navy chair and park it next to a delicately designed lamp.

    8. Enhancing Your Bedroom with a Stylish Accent Wall and Decorative Elements

An accent wall is a great bedroom decor idea when you want to introduce a new color without it taking over the space. Be sure to include that color in other elements, such as on decorative pillows or wall art. Consider painting one piece of furniture in your chosen accent color, such as a chair or dresser.

Stacks of books are an excellent bedroom decoration for a bibliophile. Shop antique stores and thrift shops for old books with covers that coordinate with your bedroom design, then stack them on windowsills, shelves, or as a base beneath your nightstand lamp.

    9. Adding a Feminine Touch to Your Bedroom with Flowers and Greenery

Flowers are nature’s feminine touch, whether they appear in the living room, home office, bedroom, or garden. It’s almost always a good idea to include flowers in a woman’s bedroom, whether it’s living flowers, faux flowers, or a simple floral idea replicated on furniture upholstery.

If a vase of real flowers feels over-the-top feminine for you, get the same soft natural aesthetic with potted plants. Line a windowsill with succulents in beautiful pots, or hang a trailing vine in the corner beside your bed.

    10. Transforming Your Space with Glamorous Bedroom Decor for Women

Glamorous decor is ideal for women who live life loud. Metallic finishes, elegant details, and luxe fabrics are all part of putting together the perfect glam space. Faux fur, velvet, satin—anything that feels lush and fabulous should be included in a glam bedroom.

Glam small bedroom ideas can make a tiny bedroom have a huge impact. A tall tufted headboard can be the room’s focal point regardless of its color. While any color is appropriate with glamorous decor, white, silver, and barely-there pink appear often.

    11. Creating a Luxurious Women’s Bedroom with Opulent Textures

A luxurious women’s bedroom is all about the textures—which is an interior design element that novice decorators often forget. Silk, velvet, high-thread-count cotton sheets, flokati, and chenille—all of these textile options add so much luxury to the best woman bedroom ideas.

If you’re drawing a blank on what a luxury bedroom means, think of your favorite high-end hotel’s interior design choices. Whether it’s a suite living room or bedroom, you’ll see fine art, overstuffed throw pillows, heavy drapes, and lots of open space.

    12. Elevating Femininity with the Timeless Allure of Pink

Pink is often thought of as a color for little girls, but there are plenty of adults that are drawn to this soothing hue. Whether it’s a pale blush or a deeper dusty rose, pink is perhaps the most feminine color of them all.

Brighter pinks also work well in feminine bedrooms. Hot pink paired with black and white pops like few other color combinations. Lighter shades of pink also look amazing on a black and white background, especially when accented with touches of gold.

    13. Crafting a Cozy and Romantic Bedroom Ambiance

Warm, welcoming, cozy—these are all concepts to incorporate if your goal is to create a romantic bedroom. A neutral color scheme is fine, but there should be darker elements as well.

A romantic bedroom should look as beautiful by candlelight as it does in daylight. Candles play a huge part in creating a romantic vibe, not only for the warm flickering light they emit, but the fragrances that add to the atmosphere. If you prefer not to have live flames inside your home, choose electronic candles and add an essential oil diffuser to fill the air with lovely scents.

    14. Embracing Scandinavian Elegance for Your Feminine Bedroom

Scandinavian style is a great feminine bedroom idea if a clean, light, and airy space best reflects your personality. This style bedroom must be uncluttered and uncomplicated to accurately capture the Scandinavian aesthetic.

A simple, light colored hardwood bed frame is an example of furniture that looks great with Scandinavian decor. Soften the often austere lines of Scandinavian interior design with woven rattan lamps or baskets.

    15. Creating a Youthful and Whimsical Feminine Bedroom

A young woman who wants a feminine bedroom can follow all the advice for older women’s bedroom decor—but perhaps with a more casual touch of whimsy. Fairy light strands are a must, as well as fun touches like a fur-covered lampshade or a daisy-shaped overhead light fixture.

For a practically free bedroom wall decor idea, tear pages from your favorite magazines and create a wall collage. Feature your favorite fashion models or K-pop stars, or beautiful scenery shots from places you dream of visiting. If you can, keep your collage within your bedroom color scheme for a more refined appearance.

    16. Transforming Your Bedroom with the Perfect Wallpaper

The right wallpaper can be just the key to tie your furniture and decor choices together. Look for an abstract floral or botanical design, or a simple geometric print. Echo your wallpaper colors throughout the space, choosing furniture and accessories that coordinate.

Metallic or pearlescent wallpaper adds shimmer and motion to the wall, as its appearance changes as the bedroom light shifts. It’s a great dramatic idea in a small space, where you may not have room for as many creative accents.

9 Bedroom Curtain Ideas and Colors

Adding curtains to your bedroom gives style and functionality to your window. They are the finishing touch to your room, like icing on a cake. They frame the window, adding texture, color, and pattern. In addition, adding curtains to your windows is a perfect opportunity for creating layers, which makes your bedroom feel comforting and cozy.

Check out these design ideas to figure out which bedroom curtain ideas will work the best for your bedroom.

    [view_toc]

    1. Transform Your Bedroom with Versatile Blind and Curtain Combos

You can hang curtains on a window even if it already has blinds. The blinds are functional but don’t do much for the room’s aesthetics. Adding curtains to blinds elevates the look of your windows.

Dark toned bedroom with pendant lights and blinds
Sleek bedroom with white blinds and wall lamps
Modern room with swirl patterned feature wall and blinds
Chic bedroom with teal walls, blinds, and matching lamps

Leaving the blinds on the window allows you to better control the amount of light coming in the window. You can also angle them to direct the light where you want it or create privacy. Your blinds and curtains shouldn’t get in the way of each other.

    2. Create a Serene Retreat with Elegant Blue Curtains

If you are going to hang plain curtains on your windows, consider choosing the color blue for your drapery. For an elevated curtain design that looks professional, consider pairing your plain curtains with a set of patterned curtains. A darker blue will help block out natural light so that you can sleep better.

Modern bedroom with blue curtains and art wall
Child’s room with blue car themed wallpaper and curtains
Opulent bedroom with royal blue drapes and sheer curtains
Rustic bedroom with exposed beams and blue curtains

A lighter blue can feel uplifting and refreshing. Additionally, consider the fabric your blue curtains are made out of. Velvet will be dense and heavy, blocking out the most light. A lighter weight fabric like cotton or linen will allow more natural light in.

    3. Achieve Perfect Darkness with Stylish Blackout Curtains

For some homeowners, curtains serve a very important purpose. They block out all light so that their bedroom is as dark as possible. Blackout curtains are a must. These aren’t curtains that you would hang anywhere else in your home, such as in the living or dining room. The front side of the curtains is fabric.

Cozy bedroom with golden curtains and balcony access
Sleek modern bedroom with gray curtains and bedding

The backside of the curtains is a special coating that thickens the fabric and blocks light from coming through. These curtains aren’t always the most attractive. They typically come in a plain color or a basic pattern, such as the Moroccan print.

    4. Elevate Your Decor with Custom-Designed Curtains

Designing your window treatment is about more than just mounting a curtain rod on the wall and hanging a curtain from it. Decorative curtains dress up white walls and bring color, pattern, and texture into the room.

Choosing curtains starts with the size. Measure the window and then measure the wall itself. Decide where you want to mount the curtain rod and how far down you want the curtains to reach. Mounting the rod close to the ceiling and then further out on either side creates the illusion that the window is bigger than it really is. Mounting the rod further out to the left and right allows the curtains to hang next to the window, framing it. This curtain style minimizes the curtain blocking the window when they are open, maximizing natural light.

    5. Bring Nature Inside with Tranquil Green Curtains

Green is a perfect color for your bedroom window curtains. Green is an earthy color that inspires feelings of calm. It pairs perfectly with other earthy neutrals like greige, beige, tan, burnt orange, or moss.

Green can also bring life into an all-white room. Soft mint green is calming, while a jewel tone like emerald will add drama and sophistication. Instead of just using plain green curtains, consider curtains with a leafy pattern. This simulates the look of plants without having to grow plants in your bedroom.

    6. Brighten Your Room with Light and Airy Sheer Curtains

Hang sheer curtains on your bedroom windows to gently filter the light coming in through the window. The curtain material should be lightweight with either fine fibers or a loose weave. You can almost see through the sheer fabric, but the view is obscured. It creates a similar effect as linen curtains on a glass door.

These curtains are good for daytime use when you want to temper the amount of natural light coming into the room during the day. If your bedroom faces the afternoon sun, then they are also good for keeping the room cooler.

    7. Embrace Modernity with Contemporary Curtain Styles

Despite curtains being used for centuries, they are still a part of modern interior design. Instead of choosing overly ornate or outdated-looking curtains, opt for modern curtains with a clean design. They could be flat panels that frame the window on either side.

Sticking with a traditional curtain design with a modern patterned print is another option. They could have a single accent line across the top. Or they could have a geometric pattern that covers the entire curtain. Don’t forget about the curtain rod, as it can reinforce the modern design of your window treatments.

    8. Opt for Practicality with Chic Short Curtain Designs

Instead of buying extra long curtains that extend to the floor, you can opt for short curtains instead. They will extend just past the bottom of the window sill. These are a better option when you have furniture in front of the window. That way, the curtains are short enough to not get tied up in the furniture so that they move smoother and more easily.

Short curtains can also be good if you have pets or children. The shorter curtains won’t get as dirty or covered in hair.

    9. Illuminate Your Bedroom with Classic White Curtains

Adding white curtains to your bedroom is the perfect accent to your bedroom design. They add a lightness to your bedroom. While white master bedroom curtains won’t block very much light, they are perfect for highlighting your bedroom windows.

If you want to add white curtains to your bedroom, consider layering them with another color. Even if that other color is a beige neutral. Hang your curtains on a dual set of curtain rods so that you can open and close the curtains independently of each other.

6 Master Bedroom Paint Color Ideas

Choosing a master bedroom color is about more than picking out a shade that you happen to like. It’s about choosing the ideal shade that creates the right atmosphere in your bedroom to put you in the best mental state. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary where you relax and recharge from the day’s challenges. Looking at decorating ideas can be helpful but will only go so far in helping you decide what’s best for your bedroom. These master bedroom paint ideas will help you figure out the perfect paint color for your bedroom makeover.

    [view_toc]

    1. Black

A black bedroom color scheme may not be your first choice, but it’s one that you should consider if you’re looking for a sleek and sophisticated design. If you’re afraid of an all black bedroom being too dramatic and intense for your tastes, consider using this dark color on an accent wall.

That way, you get all of the drama of the accent color without the overwhelming feeling of it being in the entire room. Choose a suede or matte finish to soften the look of the black.

    2. Blue

You can’t go wrong with a blue bedroom. Not only is it the most often picked favorite color, but it evokes the ideal feelings and mental state that you want to experience in your master bedroom. You can safely choose a bright color like a sky or royal blue. Alternatively, you could also choose a darker color such as navy.

Selecting a shade of blue for your bedroom wall color is about personal choice. Consider the size of your bedroom, the amount of natural light, and the interior design theme you’ve chosen when choosing your master bedroom paint color.

    3. Grey

While grey can be a smart choice for your master bedroom, you’ll need to be careful about your color choice for your grey walls. The wrong wall paint color choice will have your bedroom looking dull and depressing, which is not what you want to feel in your master bedroom.

Instead, stick with either soft pastel or dark charcoal. These greys are at either end of the spectrum and prevent your grey bedroom ideas from falling flat. It’s also smart to use varying shades of grey. This creates depth and also prevents your bedroom from becoming a boring room to be in.

    4. Beige

When it comes to decorating the master bedroom, beige could be your guiding star. This amazing shade is quietly versatile and can be used to create a warm, inviting atmosphere while still offering enough neutrality that you won’t be overwhelmed by the aesthetic choices you’ve made.

Match beige with simple wall art and modern furniture for a sleek combination or add bright blues or lush greens to warm up the room and make it feel uniquely yours. The possibilities for this particular paint color are truly endless!

Choose a neutral that will contrast nicely with your headboard to prevent everything from blending together and becoming too boring and bland. Then you can add drama and life to your bedroom with the textiles. Choosing bold colors for your throw pillows, bedding, and curtains makes it easier to change the color when you are ready for something new.

    5. Warm Color Tones

If you’re looking for a rustic chic vibe, then the perfect master bedroom designs are warm-tone ones! Start your design off with rustic wood furniture that will fit in perfectly with the cozy atmosphere. White walls will give you an added brightness and a feeling of relaxation — perfect for winding down after a day.

    6. White

Having white walls in your bedroom can sound like a stark and boring interior design theme. However, the all-white color trend proves that white can be the perfect color for your bedroom.

The trick to using white for your master bedroom walls is to add a complementary color combination. For example, paint the walls white and add black, natural wood, or neutral accents. These soften the look of the white walls while also keeping your bedroom feeling bright and fresh. It’s also helpful to add plenty of textured textiles. This makes the space cozier, which is perfect for your bedroom.

  • What Colors go With Cherry Wood Bedroom Furniture?

What Colors go With Cherry Wood Bedroom Furniture?

You have a beautiful cherry wood furniture set, and now you need to figure out what to do with it. Building your color scheme around the furniture ensures that you have a cohesive look where the colors don’t compete or clash with each other. Cherry furniture presents a unique challenge because it has strong red undertones.  You need a color that either match that level of warmth or contrasts it for a balanced look.

Try one of these colors with your cherry furniture for a beautiful arrangement in your bedroom.

    [view_toc]

Dark or Light Cherry Wood Furniture?

dark color cherry wood furniture in a bedroom

When you talk about cherry furniture, you need to acknowledge that there are two varieties, light and dark. The color you choose to coordinate with your cherry furniture will depend on whether your furniture is light or dark. The same color choice may work for both, but the shade and intensity will be different. For example, red can look good with both, but you’ll choose a brighter hue for light cherry and a darker for dark cherry wood.

If you have a light shade of cherry furniture, then you are in luck; both light and dark color shades can look good with your furniture. A light color will help to keep your bedroom feeling brighter and bigger. A darker shade with the light furniture will create a sophisticated feel, with the lighter furniture helping to keep the room from becoming too dark. Dark furniture with a light color will balance the amount of light and dark in the room. While using a dark color with dark furniture can create a room that is too dark and moody feeling. This is not necessarily a bad thing but is often too intense of a look for most people.

    White

white color bedroom with cherry furniture

White is the ultimate neutral that can go with anything. Its crisp and clean look complements both light and dark cherry wood furniture. Paint the walls or add crisp white bedding to your cherry furniture. The clean and neutral aesthetic of the white will contrast with the cherry wood without competing with it. Be careful when choosing your white color. Because cherry wood has warm undertones, it will bring out the warm undertones of your white. Choose a color with strong color undertones, and it will look even more yellow, pink, or orange next to your wood furniture.

    Sage

sage color bedroom with cherry furniture

The earthy quality of sage makes it a perfect compliment to cherry furniture. The red undertones of the cherry wood contrast with the greens of sage. With the colors being on opposite sides of the color wheel, they contrast beautifully. Be careful about the shade of sage you choose. It needs to have a richness to it that balances the richness of the cherry. If the color is too pale or washed out, then the furniture will overpower the color. It also should not be too muted; this is when it has black undertones that make the color look a bit dull. Instead, choose a saturated shade. The deep pigments will balance the color of the wood.

    Warm Gray

warm gray color bedroom with cherry furniture

At first glance, you would assume that gray is a cool color that would clash with cherry furniture. However, this is not the case. Choose a warm shade that has earthy undertones. Stay away from gray hues that have blue or green undertones. Instead, look for a gray with brown, beige, or even purple undertones. The gray will have a warmer feel that will complement the cherry furniture. Greige is another good option. It is a gray that can look both gray and beige depending on the lighting and other colors close to it.

    Deep Blue

deep blue color bedroom with cherry furniture

Give your bedroom a classic look with a deep blue shade on the walls or textiles. Deep blue has some flexibility in the color you choose. It could be a brighter blue like royal blue or a deep shade like navy blue. Both shades of blue are able to meet the color saturation and intensity of the cherry furniture. Paint the walls blue for a balance of the two colors. Then add accents of white for a clean and classic design. Blue is a perfect color for your bedroom. It is a calming color and triggers your body to release stress. This will help you fall asleep faster and sleep deeper.

    Mint Green

mint green color bedroom with cherry furniture

Using mint green with your cherry furniture gives your bedroom an unexpected contrast. The green brings out the red undertones of the wood, helping your cherry furniture to be even more red and rich looking. Mint is also a perfect color for your bedroom. Green is a soothing and calming color, helping you decompress from the day’s stress. Mint green is also a soft color that isn’t too intense, helping it to fade into the background and not overwhelm the senses. If you have dark cherry furniture, the lightness of the mint green will balance the dark furniture, preventing your bedroom from becoming too dark.

    Merlot

merlot color bedroom with cherry furniture

Designers will tell you that red isn’t the best color for your bedroom. However, this is typically said about bright or vibrant reds. A deep merlot color will look beautiful and sophisticated in your bedroom. It will also blend beautifully with your cherry furniture. Because the furniture has wood undertones, the dark merlot walls and dark furniture will blend together for an almost monotone look. When everything blends together, it can make your bedroom feel larger. In addition, the dark on dark reds can have a regal look that can make your bedroom feel more elegant and expensive.

    Rust Orange

rust orange color bedroom with cherry furniture

A rust orange color is earthy and warm, keeping in line with modern interior design trends. It works well with light cherry wood furniture that has orange undertones. Paint the walls with this orange color to create a rich and warm atmosphere that feels comforting in your bedroom. The color shouldn’t be too bright, like orange fruit. It also shouldn’t be too rustic with too strong of brown shades. Instead, stick to an earthy color that resembles clay.

    Pale Yellow

pale yellow color bedroom with cherry furniture

A soft pale yellow is a perfect accent for both light and dark cherry shades. This delicate shade balances the seriousness and heaviness of the wood by brightening up the room. While pale yellow isn’t a popular color for a bedroom, it creates a classic color combination that keeps your bedroom from becoming too dark and depressing. Choose a soft yellow that isn’t too pigmented or primary. You don’t want a harsh contrast with this color combination.

    Blackberry Purple

blackberry purple color bedroom with cherry furniture

This rich purple color isn’t a true purple. It’s deeper than that with rich black undertones. The darkness of the color helps to highlight the lighter cherry shades. The red undertones of the wood contrast beautifully with the purple hues of the blackberry purple. The black undertones of the purple help to bring out the richness of the blackberry color. The two colors give your bedroom a rich and slightly moody feel. While you could paint your walls this dark color, it might make your bedroom too dark. Instead, try using this color for the textiles in the room. This could be deep purple bed linens or plush rug.

Hardwood and laminate floors are the dominant floorings of choice in home trends these days. While it looks great in a bedroom, it has one major drawback. It doesn’t feel great on your toes as the first thing they touch when getting out of bed in the morning or the last thing your feet touch when getting in bed at night. It feels hard and slightly cold, creating a jarring experience that isn’t conducive to creating a relaxing atmosphere. To fix this, you need a rug. However, you need the right size of rug to place it correctly in your room. This guide will show you how to place a rug in your bedroom.

    [view_toc]

    The Size of Your Bed

master bedroom with large windows, rug under the bed

Where you place the area rug in your bedroom will depend greatly on the size of your bed. For example, an 8 x 10 rug will look nice under a queen sized bed but could get lost under a king if not placed correctly. If you have a king bed, then you’ll do better with a 9 x 12 rug. A full sized bed can work with a 5 x8 rug. Additionally, you will need a larger rug when you plan to place the rug underneath the bed. If you aren’t putting the rug completely under the bed, then you can get away with a smaller rug.

    A queen mattress can work with a wide range of rug sizes, including 8 x10, 6 x 9, 5 x 8, or 3 x 5 rug. The size you use will depend on your chosen placement. A king mattress can work with a 9 x 12, 8 x10, 6 x 9, 5 x 8, or 3 x 5 rug.

    The Size of the Room

bedroom interior with white walls, wooden floor, rug under the bed and armchair

The size and placement of your rug will also depend on the size and layout of your room. For example, a small room may look strange with an oversized area rug that extends out the end and sides of the bed, leaving an awkwardly large chunk of flooring in one spot. You would need to buy an even larger rug to cover the rest of the floor or a smaller rug that exposes more of the floor.

Placing a Rug in a Small Bedroom

If you have a small bedroom, then buy a larger rug that covers almost the entire floor, leaving only two to five inches of bare floor around it. A 4 x 6 or 5 x 8 rug will not be large enough for this. They only cover about two-thirds of the floor under the bed. If your small bedroom is also square-shaped, then consider placing a large round rug in the center of the room. That way, you could place at least one leg from each furniture piece in the room on the rug. This grounds the room and the furniture.

Placing a Rug in a Large Bedroom

The struggle with a large bedroom is that you need to consider proportions. The rug needs to be large enough to look balanced under the bed but also small enough to leave plenty of floor space around it. It is unlikely you will buy a rug large enough to cover the entire floor space. For example, if your bedroom is 12 x 18 feet, this would require a large rug that you will struggle to find and will be expensive.

    Bed Placement

style bedroom with white and wooden walls, rug under the bed and large windows

Where your bed is placed in your bedroom will affect where you can place your rug. If your bed is pushed against the wall, then you may only need a rug next to the bed. A bed placed in the center of the room looks good with a rug that extends out from either side and the bottom. A bed in the middle of a square room could look balanced with a round rug that is positioned in the center of the room. Then a portion of the bed would be on the rug but not the entire thing.

How to Place a Rug Under Your Bed

master bedroom with large windows, rug under the bed and a bench, additional furniture

Let’s assume that your bed is placed in the typical position, with the head pushed against the wall with the foot of the bed extending out into the center of the room.

    Under Everything

Your first option is to buy a large enough rug to go under the entire bed. Place the edge of the rug against the wall and place the bed and nightstands on the rug. The rug should be large enough to extend at least ten inches out the sides and foot.

    In Front of the Nightstands

Your second option is to place the rug completely under the bed but in front of the nightstands. With this approach, the rug should be placed close to the front of the nightstand so that you will put your feet on it when getting in and out of bed. However, it should not be pushed right up against the nightstand, either. This would crowd the nightstands and make your bedroom feel cramped.

    One Third of the Bed

If you have a small rug, turn it so that the long side of the rug is perpendicular to the bed. Then position the rug so that it is under at least one third of the bed. Finally, try to leave at least ten inches of rug overhang at the foot of the bed. This setup lets you save money on buying a smaller rug while also grounding the room.

    One on Either Side

Instead of buying one large rug that goes under the entire rug, you can buy two smaller rugs. Place one on either side of the bed. Choose long rugs that are rectangle in shape. The position the rug so that it’s eight to ten inches from the nightstand. Do not push the rug too far down towards the foot of the bed. It should be positioned under your feet when getting in or out of bed.

    At the Foot

Add an accent to the foot of the bed by placing a small rectangle rug at the foot of the bed. This is good if you have a bench or chest at the foot of your bed. It should be a small rug as you don’t want it extending too far under the bed.

Other Ways to Place a Rug in Your Bedroom

bedroom interior with large bed and a rug with armchair

If you want to define the space, you can place a rug under the other furniture in your bedroom. For example, you could have a reading nook in one corner. Placing a rug under the armchair, light, and side table defines this space and helps it to feel more intimate. If you have a vanity table or office desk, placing a small rug under these furniture pieces can help to visually define the spaces. If your bedroom is connected to your bathroom or walk-in closet, placing a long runner rug can connect these two spaces.

    1. Creative Accent Wall Ideas for Bedroom Vibrance

An accent wall is a wall that has a different color or finish than the rest of the bedroom. This can be achieved by using lighter or darker shade of paint on that wall, or by covering it in wallpaper or textured paneling. Some prefer to create a half-accent wall by painting wainscoting or beadboard a contrasting paint color.

Many people choose the accent color from the bed linen colour scheme and position the headboard on the accent wall. Others prefer to be able to see their accent bedroom wall across the room as they lie in bed. Wherever its position, an accent wall is a fantastic way to add a burst of bold color to a room otherwise dominated by neutrals.

    2. Timeless Black and White Bedroom Design

Classic black and white is a timeless interior design color scheme that works as well in the bedroom as anywhere else. While black can be too heavy to serve as a predominant bedroom color, it’s wonderful when it plays a strong role in a creative color palette.

If you have a combination of black and white furniture and accessories, paint an accent wall black. Then position your white pieces against that wall.

One of the things that makes black and white the best color combination is that it fits into any bedroom design. Houndstooth checks look great with traditional decor, while black and white toile is a great country or shabby chic bedroom idea.

    3. Soothing Blue Hues for Relaxing Bedrooms

It doesn’t matter where you go in the world: blue consistently ranks at the top when people are asked to name their favorite color. It reminds us of the sky and sea, places that most find peaceful. Blue has been proven to lower stress, making it an ideal wall color in the master bedroom.

Though counted as one primary color, blue is virtually its own rainbow. From extremely light grey with just a hint of blue to the deepest navy, the blue paint color spectrum also includes brilliant hues, like turquoise and cobalt.

Feel free to mix and match shades of blue in your bedroom color scheme. Layering blue with a touch of neutrals—such as grey or white—creates a cool, calming sanctuary you’ll look forward to returning to each night.

    4. Vibrant and Bold Colors for Energetic Bedroom Spaces

Bold color isn’t necessarily calming, but bright color hues are too amazing to exclude them from bedroom use. If you love fuchsia or lime green, include it in your bedroom color ideas. But you may wish to use it as an accent instead of painting every wall that shade.

Bohemian and country decor often includes a range of colors, and that’s as true in the bedroom as in the living room. Balance a bright bedroom color scheme with a generous dose of white, grey, or beige. These neutrals help you enjoy your favorite colours without being overwhelmed by them.

    5. Warm and Earthy Brown Tones for Cozy Bedrooms

Brown might not be the first color that comes to mind when you consider bedroom paint color ideas, but it’s one of the best paint colors for creating an organic, comfortable space. Any hue of brown paint will feel warmer than the ultra-popular grey walls appearing everywhere today.

Brown goes with literally any other color—even grey—making it an easy bedroom paint idea to work with. Brown wall color options range from pale sand to dark chocolate, enabling you to create an excellent bedroom color scheme foundation. Mediterranean, Scandinavian, and rustic are just a few of the interior designer styles that rely on brown furniture, textiles, and accessories.

    6. Dramatic Dark Colors for Intimate Bedroom Ambiance

Design experts used to turn clients away from dark bedroom wall color ideas, but now recognize that darker color paint can really elevate the dramatic impact of a bedroom. Best used in oversized rooms or those that don’t receive a lot of natural light, dark bedroom color ideas amp up the bedroom’s coziness level.

Don’t be in a rush however, to paint every bedroom in your house deep burgundy or emerald green. Those paint colors may still feel overwhelming to anyone staying in your guest bedroom. Be sure to use shiny metals and pale colors in your furniture and accessories, to provide beautiful contrast.

    7. Fun and Playful Color Schemes for Children’s Bedrooms

Even children can have strong color preferences. When possible, take their opinions into consideration when choosing their primary bedroom color. They may not be able to tell you why a certain shade is their favorite, but like you, their feelings can be influenced by the color scheme around them.

    8. Light and Airy Bedroom Colors for a Fresh Feel

Many people find that light, airy colors elevate their mood. These popular bedroom color schemes often include soft textures, natural materials, and a generous amount of natural light to enhance the room’s fresh ambience.

When taken at the lightest end of their shade spectrum, even bright colors become peaceful and soothing. Pale, creamy yellow, frosty sky blue, and blush peach are just a few options for creating a light, meditative bedroom space.

    9. Elegant Monochrome Themes for Stylish Bedrooms

A monochromatic bedroom uses just one color, but in all its varying tints and shades. Grey is a common base color for a monochrome bedroom, but any color can form the foundation for this design style.

To keep a monochromatic color scheme from being boring, incorporate many hues of your chosen color, in a variety of textures and finishes. Even though “monochrome” literally means “one color,” for design purposes you can still incorporate a neutral color to back it up. For example, a bedroom that features various shades of green can include brown wood furniture without taking anything away from its verdant color scheme.

    10. Versatile Neutral Colors for Timeless Bedroom Elegance

Neutral colors include beige, grey, cream, taupe, brown, white, and black. The beauty of neutral colors is that they coordinate with any other colors you prefer. You’ll note that most furniture comes in these colors, for this reason.

Even though bright and pastel colors look great with neutrals, some color combinations are more inviting than others. Muted colors—bright hues that are diluted with a neutral color base—coordinate well with neutrals to create a peaceful, calming bedroom. Mauve, blue-grey, and sage are a few of these beautifully muted color options.

    11. Soft and Feminine Pink Shades for Bedrooms

Pink is on the warm side of the color wheel, a mixture of red and white. Though warm colors are usually associated with excitement and stimulation, pink is a tranquil exception when used in its light-to-medium value range.

Blush pink is enjoying a long run on the trendy colors list, largely because of its peaceful, feminine vibe and how well it pairs with neutrals and metals. Hotter, brighter shades of pink can also work in the bedroom, but be sure to balance the brightness with a neutral or two.

    12. Pure and Serene White Color Schemes for Bedrooms

Symbolic of cleanliness and purity, white can evoke mental clarity or feel terribly clinical depending on how it’s used. White is appearing more often in bedrooms again now that farmhouse style has become commonplace.

The secret to creating an inspiring white bedroom is to add plenty of natural elements and soft textures that diminish any harshness. Or choose one of the many almost-white paint colors for your bedroom walls. Plenty of warm white options are available with undertones of yellow, pink, or peach. These provide the elegance of a white bedroom but feel much more welcoming than plain bright white.

  • Where to Put Mirror in a Bedroom?

Where to Put Mirror in a Bedroom?

There is a right and wrong way to add a mirror to your bedroom. Is yours in the right place? If it is, your mirror should increase the amount of natural light in your bedroom. It should help to make your bedroom feel larger and more spacious. It should also add the overall design style of the room.

If your bedroom design doesn’t do all of these things, then it’s time to learn where to put a mirror in your bedroom.

    [view_toc]

Do I Have to Hang a Mirror in My Bedroom?

    bedroom interior with large mirror

While interior design rules state that you should use a mirror to increase natural light and make your bedroom feel larger, that doesn’t mean you have to use one. Remember, it is your house and your bedroom. If a mirror in the bedroom makes you feel uncomfortable, awkward, or stressed, then it’s best to keep the mirror in your bathroom, closet, or en-suite area.

Maximizing Natural Light with a Mirror

    natural light bedroom with mirror

Beyond its purpose of helping you get dressed, mirrors are perfect for creating more natural light in your bedroom. To do this, you’ll need to place it near the windows in your bedroom. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that. Pay attention to the walls in your bedroom where the sun comes in. If you want to maximize the amount of light, the mirror should be hung where the light comes in. You can also place the mirror in the darkest corner to brighten it up. Both of these approaches will make the most of the available natural light in your bedroom.

    Mirror Placement Based on Size

    bedroom with elegant round mirror

Where you hang, your bedroom can be largely dependent on the size and shape of the mirror. You need to have the space available for the mirror to look purposeful and not crammed into a space.

    Small Mirrors

If you have a small mirror that is only large enough to see your face, it’s best to use it as decor or an accent. Arrange multiple small mirrors in decorative frames on a wall.  Place them higher on the wall or above the headboard

    Large Square and Rectangle Mirrors

A large square-shaped mirror is perfect for use above your dresser or on the wall over your headboard. These walls tend to be large areas that can support a larger mirror. If you have a vanity table or desk, it will also work in these spaces.

Whatever wall you decide to hang your mirror on, make sure it’s not facing a blank wall. While it can face a wall, it shouldn’t be plain. This will just add more plain walls to your bedroom as it gets reflected in the mirror. Instead, add some decor to the opposite wall. For example, add a painting, floating shelf, framed pictures, macrame wall hanging, or other decor.

    Oversized Mirrors

Extra-large mirrors make a strong statement and act as a focal point in your bedroom. These mirrors are placed on the floor and are either freestanding or lean against the wall. This makes them perfect for seeing your entire outfit from head to toe. Try placing this large mirror against a wall with plenty of space in front of it to have room to stand back. You could also use it as part of an arrangement. For example, position it against the wall in a dead corner and then place a floor lamp and armchair with it.

    Tall and Skinny Mirrors

Frame your bed with two tall and skinny mirrors. This creates symmetry and balance in your bedroom design. You can place them behind or just outside of your nightstands. Choose mirrors that are tall enough to balance the height of your headboard. You don’t want them too tall, making your headboard look squat. However, tall and narrow mirrors are good for creating the illusion that your ceiling is taller.  If you try this approach and the mirrors are too short, you can actually bring down the visual height of your room.

You can also place a tall and skinny mirror in a dead corner. It will fit neatly into the corner and help open up the space. To have it point out from the center of the corner, choose a mirror that’s on a stand.

    Mirrored Doors

bedroom in a wooden wardrobe with mirrored doors

Instead of hanging a mirror on the wall, you can cover one of the doors in your bedroom with a mirror. For example, you could hang a mirror on the backside of your bedroom or closet door. If you have a large closet opening with double bifold doors, you could replace these doors with mirror-covered sliding doors. This creates one oversized mirror that takes up the majority of the wall. If you have a small bedroom, this can create the illusion that your bedroom is significantly larger.

    Feng Shui Mirror Rules

bedroom with white brick wall and a mirror facing in a bed

Following Feng Shui rules can be tricky because there are several schools of Feng Shui, and sometimes they directly contradict each other. Start with the placement of your bed, and then you’ll know where to place your mirror. Your bed is the physical representation of you in the room, so it should be in the command position. When lying in bed, you should be able to see the door. If you can’t have this placement in your bedroom, you can place the mirror on the wall facing the bed. That way, you can see the doorway from the bed by looking at its reflection in the mirror.

Some Feng Shui schools state that you shouldn’t use a mirror in the bedroom at all. They are thought to energize a room, which is the exact opposite of what you want when trying to get restful sleep. Additionally, they double what they project, so if your mirror is reflecting the clutter in your bedroom, you are doubling the chaos.

Where Not to Place a Mirror in the Bedroom

bedroom in a modern style with mirror

Unless you have a particular purpose in mind, do not place your mirror on the ceiling above the bed, as the headboard, or directly in front of the foot of the bed. These are all places that point directly at you while lying in bed. While this may be ideal for some people, it creates an awkward reflection for most. This can make it hard to fall asleep and reduce the level of comfort and relaxation you feel while laying in bed. These locations are also not ideal for reflecting the natural light or being convenient for getting dressed.

You also shouldn’t hang two mirrors that face each other. They will create an endless reflection that eliminates the illusion of a larger room that one mirror creates. Some people find the endless reflections a bit unnerving.

  • Best Bedroom Colors for Couples

    Best Bedroom Colors for Couples

Picking a color for your bedroom is challenging enough when it’s just you. It gets even more complicated when two of you have to agree on a color. The perfect bedroom color for couples will be a color that creates the right kind of atmosphere and energy. This could be one that encourages serenity and comfort, or it could be one that is cheery and energizing.

These are the best bedroom colors for couples looking to update their bedrooms.

    [view_toc]

Choosing the Best Color For Your Bedroom

Picking a color for your bedroom is a personal choice. While each of these colors has feelings and emotions associated with them, they affect everyone differently. Your age, gender, personal experiences, and culture influence how you perceive and react to a particular color. Use this as a general guideline for each color while also keeping in mind how you feel about its color and its effect on your mental state, mood, and energy level.

    Blue

    blue bedroom colors for couples

Choosing a blue shade will inspire feelings of tranquility and calmness. It’s been shown that looking at the color blue reduces blood pressure and heart rate. There are sensors in the human eye that make us more sensitive to blue colors. Not only will your blue bedroom look beautiful, but it will actively help you achieve a better night’s sleep. From the lightest shades that mirror the sky to the deepest ocean blues, you can’t go wrong when choosing a blue shade. Pale shades will help your bedroom to feel less serious. Darker shades like indigo and navy will have a sophisticated feel. Modern designs have also embraced blues with a gray undertone. They have a muted look that makes them more flexible when decorating the rest of your room.

    Blue Bedroom Color Palettes

Dark blue shades look beautiful when balanced with shades of white and cream. You can also soften dark shades with light gray shades. To brighten up the room, you could add accents of yellow or orange. Using shades of greens and teal mimics the colors of the ocean.

    Green

    green bedroom colors for couples

The second most popular color for bedrooms is green. It’s another color that works in a wide range of shades. Green is the color of nature, inspiring feelings of vitality, life, and serenity. It can also bring feelings of prosperity and good luck in some cultures. Try using sage, olive, or even forest green for an earthy feel. For a refreshing feel, mint is light and bright. Saturated colors that make a bold statement are jade, teal, and emerald. These colors are richly pigmented, helping you to surround yourself with green. Darker shades of green can add a feeling of sophisticated luxury to your bedroom.

    Green Bedroom Color Palettes

Embrace the colors of nature by using multiple shades of green. Keep the green colors you choose in the same color family for a coordinated look. Then keep it light and fresh with a light neutral like beige or cream. For a moody and darker color palette, accent your green with a rich brown or dark green that looks almost black.

    Silver Gray

silver gray bedroom colors for couples

A modern trend that is becoming more popular among couples is embracing metallics as a color. Silver gray is popular because it mimics the color of the moonlight. Your brain associates it with night, which is when you sleep. So by association, using silver-gray in your bedroom will help you fall asleep faster thanks to its sleep-inducing and soothing qualities. To give this color a try in your bedroom, try metallic wallpaper and silver metal finishes. Silver gray colored paint will end up looking like light gray, which is not the same and won’t have the same effect. A silver gray metallic will create a glamorous look in your bedroom while light grey won’t.

    Silver Gray Bedroom Color Palettes

Embrace the silver look by keeping your color palette light. Your gray colors need to have enough variation to create depth and visual interest, though. Once you have your primary set of grays, add highlights of dark gray that look almost black. This breaks up the gray and prevents your room design from becoming flat.

    Dark Gray

dark gray bedroom colors for couples

If silver-gray doesn’t sound appealing, consider a gray at the opposite end of the spectrum. A dark gray like charcoal or gunmetal will have a grounding effect that will help you to feel stabilized and secure. Darker grays have a sophisticated look that is often associated with modern luxury. There is also a softness to the dark gray that helps it to feel more comfortable and less harsh than inky black.

If you decide to use gray, stick with either the lightest pale shades that are close to white or the saturated deep greys. The mid-tone shades are best left to the other rooms in your home. When used in the bedroom, they tend to feel depressing, isolating, and dreary.

    Dark Gray Bedroom Color Palettes

Embrace the moodiness of dark grey by choosing other colors that have dark grey undertones. Think gray-blue or gray-green. You’ll also want to add highlights of a light shade of gray to create depth. If you want to add touches of color to your gray room, try pale pink, mauve, turquoise, or mustard yellow.

    White

    white bedroom colors for couples

If you can’t agree on a color, opt for no color with an all-white color scheme. White is clean, bright, and crisp. It’s also the color of healing and serenity, which can make your bedroom the perfect place to clear your mind and mentally overcome whatever challenges you’re facing in life. Not all whites are the same, though. Decide if you want a warm or cool white. Warm white colors like cream add warmth thanks to their yellow, pink, or orange undertones. Cool whites might feel sleek with blue or purple undertones.

Add visual interest to your bedroom by choosing a white with a color undertone. Pure white is harsh and hard to match. White with a color undertone is easier to pair with textiles and furniture that will have its own undertones.

    Black

There was a time when people would never consider painting their bedroom walls black. It’s a moody and dramatic color that makes a strong statement. However, modern design trends embrace the color black by using it as an accent color. Black can help create the ultimate dark space for drifting off into sleep. It can also help your bedroom feel cozy and intimate by bringing the space in. A black bedroom can look sophisticated and strong with a sense of formality and elegance. It takes someone with a strong sense of individuality and authority to embrace the color black in the bedroom.

For a neutral bedroom, use only black, gray, and white in your bedroom. Keep the color palette dark and add metallic accents for a glam look. You could also add a touch of color with highlights of your favorite color. Black is technically the void of color so that it can work with any color.

    Red

You’ll commonly hear that red is a terrible color choice for the bedroom. However, this isn’t necessarily true. In Chinese culture, red is the color of good luck and happiness. Who wouldn’t want to inspire these feelings in their life? In Indian culture, red is the color of marriage. In Western cultures, red is the color of love, romance, and passion. It can be a bold and empowering color, helping you to feel more confident when you are getting ready to face the day. Choose a wine-inspired color to feature red without it becoming overwhelming or too intense. Do not use a primary shade of red as you would see on a fire engine. Additionally, avoid bright reds that you would see in a restaurant.

Because red is such a strong color, keep the rest of your color palette simple with white, cream, light gray, charcoal gray, or black.

    Purple

Not all purples work well in the bedroom. Because it is a hit-or-miss color, you need to be careful about the purple you choose. Highly saturated purples in plum or grape may be associated with luxury and royalty, but they are also associated with people getting the worst night’s sleep. These colors are mentally over-stimulating and will make it impossible to relax. It also inspires feelings of creativity, which can lead to overly active and vivid dreams. If you like the color purple and want to use it in your bedroom, try a light shade like delight lavender. Then your brain will associate it with the smell of lavender, which is a relaxing scent. For a darker shade, try blackberry wine. This shade has black undertones and will be less intense than a color like plum.

Light purples look beautiful with other light shades of purple or grey with purple undertones. You can add highlights with white or grey shades that have pink undertones. Deep wine purple shades look beautiful with teal, turquoise, and yellow. Embrace the saturation and vibrancy of the purple by choosing other richly-hued colors.

    Earthy Neutrals

Create warmth and comfort in your bedroom by using earthy neutrals. They appeal to both men and women while also working with a variety of interior design styles. Instead of choosing just one, they work best when you use a combination of colors. Try using colors like sage, terra cotta, clay, and moss.  Neutrals have a soothing and calming effect. Nneutrals inspired by nature also have a calming and recharging effect, similar to going on a walk through the forest. An easy approach to this color palette is to pick colors that are found in nature in your region. This brings the colors of nature right outside your home into the bedroom. This helps prevent your bedroom from feeling out of place. For example, if you live in the northeast, using colors from the American Southwest won’t look cohesive.

Focus on choosing colors that are naturally found in nature. Terra cotta, rust, deep blue, leaf green, dirt brown, and sandy tan are all good examples of earthy neutrals. The goal is to create a warm and welcoming bedroom that feels cozy and comfortable.

    Yellow

Paint your bedroom walls with a soft and pale butter yellow or saturated and bold goldenrod. These colors will stimulate your nervous system and calm your nerves. This helps you to feel less stressed or anxious. Yellow is also considered a warm color, helping to bring comfort into the space. It’s also a bright color, inspiring feelings of positivity and energy. A word of caution, don’t use a primary shade of yellow. This will be too intense and bright, making it difficult to fall asleep at night.

    Yellow Bedroom Color Palettes

Blue is one of the most versatile color palettes that work with a wide range of colors. From grey to green and blue, they all can look beautiful with yellow. Dark shades of these colors will balance a bright yellow and keep it from becoming too bright and overwhelming. Light yellow shades can add a nice touch to a light neutral color palette.

    Orange

Despite orange being a less popular color for bedroom colors, it’s one worth considering. From coral to melon and citrus, these colors bring energy and warmth into your bedroom. This can help you wake up in the morning and feel ready to face the day. Notice that these shades of orange are closer to the colors of the sunset and not the color of the fruit. If you’re nervous about orange paint becoming too overwhelming, consider pairing it with a creamy white. This off-white accent mirrors the warmth of the orange while also softening it. Another option is to pair it with earthy tones to inspire the calming feeling of nature.

The color palette you use with your orange shade will depend on the orange you’re using. Light and bright oranges look best with yellow, white, blue, and peach. Darker orange shades can give your room an American Southwest feel with bold patterns, turquoise, and teal.
